Annotated Bibliography & Video Review: How Isolation Fuels Opioid Addiction
Rachel Wurzman’s groundbreaking research linking social isolation to rising cases of opioid addiction is shared in her TED Talk, “How isolation fuels opioid addiction.” Learning about the significance of the striatum, a section of the brain that automates most of our behaviors, was one of the ideas that really stood out for me. As a result, striatal miswiring can explain the compulsive behaviors and lack of self-regulation that people with Tourette Syndrome and other compulsive impulsive behaviors experience. Another important and surprising discovery was the dangers associated with loneliness. People who lack social connections are more vulnerable to addiction, as their desperate need to rebalance their social neurochemistry leads them to seek relief from anywhere. Loneliness can hypersensitize people’s social reward systems, causing the striatum to respond to signals of pleasure and reward. As a result, she emphasizes the importance of that part of the brain in explaining the nation’s rising rates of opioid addiction and death. Wurzman’s speech altered my perception of addiction and relapse, as well as how treatment options must be re-configured to focus on rebalancing social reward systems and recognizing the importance of social relationships. I was particularly surprised to learn that people with extensive and authentic social connections have lower rates of relapse than those with fewer connections. In light of the new information, one of the things I would have liked to know was how the criminalization of addiction in society should be approached from a different angle. Another thing I’d like to know is how people with compulsive disorders, such as Wurzman, have avoided drug addiction, given that they, like opioid addicts, struggle with self-regulation. Finally, the video emphasizes the importance of developing deep and authentic connections as a means of keeping our striatum healthy. She does, however, mention that the opioid crisis is worse in poorer communities with a pessimistic outlook on life. As a result, I’d like to know how opioid susceptibility is linked to poverty.

K. Dugosh, A. Abraham, B. Seymour, K. McLoyd, M. Chalk, and D. Festinger (2016). A systematic review of psychosocial interventions used in conjunction with medications to treat opioid addiction. 10.1097/ADM.0000000000000193, Journal of Addiction Medicine, 10(2), 91.
The article provides a critical review of studies focusing on the efficacy of combining psychosocial interventions with other medications. Despite the fact that there are a number of medications available to treat opioid addiction, the rising number of opioid deaths in the United States highlights the importance of re-examining the issue. The use of psychosocial interventions, which employ cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, has attracted research attention. The findings of the literature review emphasize the importance of combining both medications and psychosocial interventions to address the opioid crisis comprehensively. The study is significant because it emphasizes that no single intervention can address the opioid crisis and emphasizes the need for more research focusing on treatment outcomes.
K. Fornili (2018). The opioid crisis, suicides, and other related conditions are the result of multiple clustered syndemics, rather than a single epidemic. 214-220 in Journal of Addictions Nursing, 29(3).
The article begins with a chilling report prepared by the American Psychiatric Association, which presents data on opioid overdoses and the role of suicide in those deaths in the United States. The report revealed the critical role of suicide in the recent opioid overdose epidemic and identified social determinants and drug use as risk factors for death. Most importantly, it emphasizes how associations have collaborated to develop studies that can provide relief to the addiction theory. The paper also indicates the occurrence of multiple disorder interactions that combine synergistically to form syndemic conditions. The author also discusses identifying the risk of overdose, which is an important mitigation tool. The author discusses how to use standardized screening to reduce opioid addiction. Finally, the article suggests increasing the number of strategies for dealing with opioid addiction and misuse.
