Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study conducted by Tanzer et al. (2023) was to examine patients’ perceptions of priority in emergency department triage. Specifically, the aim was to understand “how patients perceive and experience the triage process and priority assignment” (p. 294).
Type of Research & Design
Tanzer et al. (2023) employed a qualitative descriptive research design using semi-structured interviews. This approach was appropriate as it allowed for an in-depth exploration of patients’ perspectives on triage priority in their own words (Polit & Beck, 2017). The interviews were analyzed using conventional content analysis to identify themes in participants’ responses.
Sample

A purposive sample of 20 adult emergency department patients was recruited from two hospitals in Canada. Participants represented a range of triage levels and acuity levels (Tanzer et al., 2023).
Data Collection
Patients participated in individual interviews within 72 hours of discharge from the emergency department. The semi-structured interview guide included open-ended questions about patients’ experiences and perceptions of the triage process and priority assignment (Tanzer et al., 2023).
Data Analysis
Conventional content analysis was used to analyze interview transcripts without preconceived categories. This inductive approach helped identify key themes directly from the data (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005). Two researchers independently coded the transcripts and then met to reach consensus on the final coding structure and themes (Tanzer et al., 2023).
Limitations
A potential limitation was that interviews were conducted up to 72 hours post-discharge, so patients’ recollections of their ED visit may have become less clear over time (Tanzer et al., 2023). Future studies could interview patients closer to the actual time of triage assessment.
Findings/Discussion

One interesting finding was that many patients did not fully understand the triage system or priority levels assigned to them. This led some patients to question why others were seen more quickly despite presenting with less severe complaints (Tanzer et al., 2023, p. 300). Overall, the study provided useful insights into patients’ experiences of emergency department triage.
Reading Research Literature
It is important for me to read research literature to stay informed of the latest evidence and developments in my field. Completing this activity helped me practice summarizing research concisely and identifying key elements of a study, which are useful skills for understanding and applying research findings.
