– systematically analyse the range of social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political factors which impact healthcare systems

Assessment details
Describe a healthcare system or policy or practice that you usually work in or you are aware of/familiar with. This system, policy or practice can be broad (e.g., at a state, national, international level) or more specific (e.g., at a local, community or organisational level)
a) Design a concept map or causal loop to represent the key elements of the chosen health system/policy/practice. In your figure, your basic key elements should include drivers/inputs, stakeholders, as well as outcomes. It is important that you clearly link/connect these factors to represent how they influence one another.
b) Explain your figure by briefly discussing the key interconnected elements and outcomes of the system, policy, or practice. In this discussion, you can talk about strengths and weaknesses of the system, as well as any positive or negative outcomes.

You may use some parts of this assignment for the next assessments (No rephrasing is required for using the content of your assignments within the same unit).
Notes:
– Please refer to HL READING 1&2 where Healthcare systems/policies and their components are defined/explained.
Please refer to HL READING 3 – 5 for information on system representing tools of concept maps and causal loops. You may use any visual medium to represent the system and the relationships between key elements but remember that systems are often not simply

– linear. For example, you can use arrows, linking words, or +/- to represent a positive or negative influence.
– There are plenty of concept mapping and causal loop tools/makers online that you can use to create your visual system representation. Alternatively, you can simply use Microsoft word.
Check the structure, format, grammar, punctuation, flow, and coherence of your assignment.

Assignment structure
There can be variations in preparing your assignment. However, the below outline is suggested
You can present many factors in your visual map but you do not need to cover all of these in your written explanation. You can choose to focus on a few factors and their relationships, or on the outcomes/outputs of the systems, or on some strengths or limitations of the system for example.
But if there is a specific reason you have them in a certain order like abcd then the reader might assume that there is a logical flow

Drivers/Inputs:

Government Funding: Financial resources allocated by the government to support the healthcare system.
Demographics: The characteristics of the population, including age distribution, health status, and healthcare needs.
Healthcare Workforce: Medical professionals, nurses, technicians, and support staff who provide healthcare services.

Demographics impact the demand for healthcare and resource allocation.
Healthcare Workforce availability affects access to care and quality of services.
Medical Technology advancements contribute to improved diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
Public Health Initiatives influence health promotion and disease prevention strategies.
Outcomes:

Accessibility: The extent to which individuals can obtain healthcare services in a timely manner.
Quality of Care: The standard of healthcare provided, including safety, effectiveness, and patient experience.
Health Outcomes: The impact of healthcare interventions on individual and population health.
Equity: The fairness in healthcare access and outcomes, irrespective of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or geographical location.
Explanation:
The Canadian healthcare system is a publicly funded, universal system that aims to provide comprehensive healthcare services to all residents of Canada. It is driven by various inputs, including government funding, demographic factors, the healthcare workforce, medical technology, and public health initiatives.

The stakeholders in the Canadian healthcare system include patients, healthcare providers, the government, insurance providers, the pharmaceutical industry, and NGOs. These stakeholders interact and collaborate to deliver and improve healthcare services.

Government funding plays a crucial role in shaping the healthcare system. It determines the availability of resources, infrastructure development, and accessibility of care. Demographics, such as an aging population or specific health needs, influence resource allocation and service planning.

The healthcare workforce, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, is essential for delivering care. The availability and distribution of healthcare professionals impact access to care, especially in remote or underserved areas.

Medical technology advancements enhance diagnosis, treatment, and overall healthcare outcomes. The integration of innovative technologies improves patient care and contributes to positive health outcomes.

Public health initiatives focus on health promotion and disease prevention. These initiatives include vaccination programs, health education campaigns, and policies aimed at reducing risk factors and improving population health.

The outcomes of the Canadian healthcare system can be assessed based on accessibility, quality of care, health outcomes, and equity. Accessibility refers to the timely access to healthcare services without financial barriers. The quality of care encompasses patient safety, effectiveness, and patient-centeredness. Health outcomes measure the impact of healthcare interventions on individual and population health. Equity ensures that all individuals have fair access to healthcare services and experience equitable health outcomes.

Strengths of the Canadian healthcare system include its universal coverage, emphasis on preventive care, and relatively good health outcomes compared to many other countries. However, challenges such as long wait times for certain procedures, regional disparities in healthcare access, and rising healthcare costs are areas that require attention and improvement.

In conclusion, the Canadian healthcare system is a complex interplay of various drivers, stakeholders, and outcomes. Understanding these interconnected elements helps to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, and identify opportunities for enhancing healthcare delivery and population health outcomes.
