Reducing the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Reducing the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: What You Need to Know

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death of a baby younger than one year old, usually during sleep. SIDS is also known as crib death or cot death. It is the leading cause of death for infants between one month and one year of age in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .

The exact causes of SIDS are unknown, but researchers have identified some risk factors that can increase the chances of a baby dying from SIDS. These include:

– Sleeping on the stomach or side, instead of on the back
– Sleeping on a soft surface, such as a couch, pillow, or quilt
– Sharing a bed with parents, siblings, or pets
– Overheating during sleep
– Being exposed to cigarette smoke before or after birth
– Being born prematurely or with a low birth weight
– Having a mother who smoked, drank alcohol, or used drugs during pregnancy
– Having a family history of SIDS

To reduce the risk of SIDS, experts recommend following these safe sleep practices for babies :

– Always place your baby on his or her back to sleep, for naps and at night
– Use a firm and flat sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered by a fitted sheet
– Keep soft objects, toys, and loose bedding out of your baby’s sleep area
– Do not let your baby sleep in an adult bed, on a couch, or on a chair alone, with you, or with anyone else
– Keep your baby’s sleep area in the same room where you sleep for the first six months or, ideally, for the first year. Place your baby’s crib, bassinet, portable crib, or play yard close to your bed.
– Avoid overdressing your baby or covering your baby’s head or face during sleep
– Breastfeed your baby if possible. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS by about 50% .
– Give your baby a pacifier at nap time and bedtime. The pacifier should not have cords or clips that might be a choking hazard.
– Do not smoke during pregnancy or allow anyone to smoke near your baby
– Make sure your baby gets regular checkups and vaccinations. Some studies have shown that immunizations can protect against SIDS .
– Offer your baby a variety of activities and stimulation when he or she is awake. This can help your baby develop healthy brain and body functions.

By following these tips, you can create a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for your baby and lower the risk of SIDS. However, remember that there is no guaranteed way to prevent SIDS. If you have any questions or concerns about your baby’s health or sleep habits, talk to your pediatrician or health care provider.
