Guidance and Expectations

Your Personal Leadership Development Plan should consist of six sections. The first section is an introduction and key findings or areas of focus from self-reflection, key insights from your weekly personal reflection papers, and the Leadership Self-Assessment you will take: MGMT 6150 Leadership Self Assessment.pdf You do NOT need to submit this Leadership Self Assessment, previous reflection papers, or other supporting documents along with your Personal Leadership Development Plan. The only thing you will submit for your final is your Personal Leadership Development Plan.

Sections two through six of your Personal Leadership Development Plan apply the two to three (2-3) key principles of each one of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” from The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner to your unique situation and clearly state a course of action for personal leadership development. Here is a brief overview:

Introduction and Personal Self-Assessment
Model the Way Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
Inspire a Shared Vision Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
Challenge the Process Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
Enable Others to Act Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
Encourage the Heart Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
The grading rubric for this assignment is also broken down into specific assessments for each one of these areas. Please carefully review the grading rubric as you complete this assignment.

Section 1: Introduction and Personal Self-Assessment

Your Personal Leadership Development Plan should begin with a personal self-assessment section that provides a thoughtful and meaningful assessment of your current leadership behaviors based on personal reflection, observations from your weekly personal reflection papers, and the Leadership Self-Assessment. Similar to the case study analysis and personal reflection assignments used throughout this course, this first section should address the following questions:

How well do you currently demonstrate the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” from Kouzes and Posner’s The Leadership Challenge?
Which of these principles do you use most effectively and which do you use least effectively?
What should you do to use the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” more effectively?
This section should also demonstrate a solid understanding of the principles and concepts presented in the reading materials and discussions and how they apply to your unique situation.

The Personal Self-Assessment Section acts as the overall introduction to your paper, providing the background on your leadership behaviors and guidance on the direction that you will take in the rest of the paper.

Sections 2-6: The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership fromThe Leadership Challenge

The next five sections should each address one of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership from The Leadership Challenge.

Application of Principles. Each section should demonstrate a solid understanding of how to apply the principles and concepts from the reading assignments and discussions associated with that specific Practice of Exemplary Leadership to your unique situation and the 2-3 principles from each practice you will focus on.

To meet expectations, the section must demonstrate a mastery of these principles by specifically referencing and appropriately applying two to three (2-3) principles from EACH practice (i.e. Practice 1: Model the Way; Practice 2: Inspire a Shared Vision; etc.) to support your personal situation. Failure to reference and/or apply these principles from The Leadership Challenge to your unique situation may result in no points being awarded for that section.

Clearly Stated Course of Action for Personal Development. Each section should clearly state a personal development course of action related to your two to three (2-3) principles that will help you to further develop that specific Practice of Exemplary Leadership. The course of action should outline two to three (2-3) specific things you will do, steps you will take, etc. to develop each of these principles. The action plan should be supported by principles from the reading material and discussions and applied to your unique situation.

Personal Leadership Development Plan

Introduction and Personal Self-Assessment:

In this Personal Leadership Development Plan, I will provide a self-assessment of my current leadership behaviors based on personal reflection, observations from my weekly personal reflection papers, and the Leadership Self-Assessment. I will also address the following questions:

How well do I currently demonstrate the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” from Kouzes and Posner’s The Leadership Challenge?
Which of these principles do I use most effectively, and which do I use least effectively?
What should I do to use the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” more effectively?
To begin with, I have found through my self-assessment and reflection that I demonstrate some of the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” effectively, while others require further development. I have a strong ability to model the way by setting a positive example for others and demonstrating integrity, but I struggle with enabling others to act and inspiring a shared vision. Additionally, I have identified a need for improvement in challenging the process and encouraging the heart.

To use the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” more effectively, I will focus on developing the following areas:

Model the Way Principles and Action Plan:
a. Principle 1: Clarify values and set the example – I will take time to reflect on my core values and ensure that my actions align with them. I will communicate my values to my team and lead by example.
b. Principle 2: Set challenging goals – I will establish clear and ambitious goals for myself and my team. I will communicate these goals effectively, ensuring they are understood and aligned with the organization’s vision.
c. Principle 3: Seek feedback – I will actively seek feedback from my team and colleagues to gain insights into areas where I can improve my leadership behaviors. I will create a culture that encourages open and honest feedback.

Inspire a Shared Vision Principles and Action Plan:
a. Principle 1: Envision the future – I will spend time reflecting on the long-term goals of the organization and articulate a compelling vision that inspires and motivates others. I will communicate this vision clearly and consistently to ensure alignment.
b. Principle 2: Foster collaboration – I will encourage collaboration and teamwork within my team by creating opportunities for open dialogue and idea sharing. I will promote a culture of inclusivity and value diverse perspectives.
c. Principle 3: Recognize contributions – I will acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of individuals within my team. I will celebrate milestones and successes to foster a sense of achievement and motivation.

Challenge the Process Principles and Action Plan:
a. Principle 1: Embrace innovation – I will encourage a culture of innovation by promoting creative thinking and exploring new approaches to problem-solving. I will actively seek out opportunities to challenge the status quo and embrace change.
b. Principle 2: Foster a learning environment – I will support and encourage ongoing learning and development within my team. I will provide resources and opportunities for growth and create a safe space for taking risks and learning from failures.
c. Principle 3: Empower others – I will delegate responsibilities and decision-making authority to team members, allowing them to take ownership and grow in their roles. I will provide guidance and support while giving them the autonomy to make decisions.

Enable Others to Act Principles and Action Plan:
a. Principle 1: Build trust – I will prioritize building trust with my team by being transparent, reliable, and accountable. I will actively listen to their concerns and address them promptly and effectively.
b. Principle 2: Foster collaboration – I will create an environment that encourages collaboration and teamwork. I will facilitate open communication channels, promote respect, and provide opportunities for shared decision-making.
c. Principle 3: Develop others – I will invest in the development of my team members by providing mentorship, coaching, and growth opportunities. I will identify their strengths and help them leverage those strengths to achieve their full potential.

Encourage the Heart Principles and Action Plan:
a. Principle 1: Express appreciation – I will regularly express gratitude and appreciation for the efforts and contributions of my team members. I will provide specific feedback and recognition to acknowledge their hard work.
b. Principle 2: Celebrate successes – I will celebrate both individual and team successes. I will create a culture that values and rewards achievements, fostering a sense of pride and motivation.
c. Principle 3: Support work-life balance – I will promote work-life balance within my team by encouraging self-care, flexibility, and understanding. I will consider individual needs and strive to create a supportive work environment.

In conclusion, this Personal Leadership Development Plan outlines the areas where I currently excel in demonstrating the principles of “The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” and those that require further development. By focusing on specific actions outlined in each section, I aim to enhance my leadership skills and become a more effective and inspiring leader. Through self-reflection, continuous learning, and the application of these principles, I am committed to personal growth and the development of a strong leadership foundation.
