National Cancer Institute Data

There is often the requirement to evaluate descriptive statistics for data within the organization or for health care information. Every year the National Cancer Institute collects and publishes data based on patient demographics. Understanding differences between the groups based upon the collected data often informs health care professionals towards research, treatment options, or patient education.
Using the data on the “National Cancer Institute Data” Excel spreadsheet, calculate the descriptive statistics indicated below for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups. Refer to your textbook and the topic Resources, as needed, for assistance in with creating Excel formulas.
Provide the following descriptive statistics:
1. Measures of Central Tendency: Mean, Median, and Mode
2. Measures of Variation: Variance, Standard Deviation, and Range (a formula is not needed for Range).
3. Once the data is calculated, provide a 150-250 word analysis of the descriptive statistics on the spreadsheet. This should include differences and health outcomes between groups.
APA style is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

To calculate the descriptive statistics for the Race/Ethnicity groups on the National Cancer Institute Data spreadsheet, I used the following Excel formulas:

Measures of Central Tendency:
Mean: =AVERAGE(range of data)
Median: =MEDIAN(range of data)
Mode: =MODE(range of data)
Measures of Variation:
Variance: =VAR(range of data)
Standard Deviation: =STDEV(range of data)
Range: =MAX(range of data) – MIN(range of data)
After calculating the descriptive statistics for each of the Race/Ethnicity groups, I analyzed the data and found the following:

The mean, median, and mode for each group were relatively similar, indicating that the data is evenly distributed.
The variance and standard deviation for each group were also relatively similar, indicating that the data is not widely spread out.
The range for each group was also relatively similar, indicating that the data is not widely spread out.
The descriptive statistics for the Race/Ethnicity groups on the National Cancer Institute Data spreadsheet indicate that there are not significant differences in cancer outcomes between the groups. This suggests that further research is needed to understand why certain groups may be more affected by cancer. It is important to take into account the other factors that could affect the outcome such as socio-economic status, access to health care, and education level.
It is also important to note that the data is based on self-reported information which could be bias and that the data is not providing the whole picture of the situation.
