Movie in Relation to Nursing
The 2012 documentary film Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare provides insightful perspectives into the current state of the U.S. healthcare system and opportunities for nursing reform. The movie examines structural issues that have contributed to escalating costs and reduced access to care over recent decades. Through interviews with nurses, physicians, patients and healthcare leaders, key themes emerge such as the prioritization of financial interests over patient wellness, lack of prevention focus, and narrow provider training that limits holistic care approaches (Kohn et al., 2016).
A central argument presented is that the medical paradigm of treating illness after the fact, rather than preventing disease, has proven unsustainable both economically and from a public health standpoint (Porter & Lee, 2013). Nurses are highlighted for their ability to serve as patient advocates and coordinate more continuous care across settings.
