Unit 2 Assignment Directions
Choose one prescription drug that has a generic available (the pharmacy MUST sell both the generic and the brand of the chosen drug) and one over-the-counter (OTC) drug you would be likely to recommend to patients. Next locate one pharmacy from each of the four different types listed below:
Large chain pharmacies such as Walgreens, CVS, Eckard’s, etc.
Grocery store associate pharmacies such as Publix, Kroger, etc.
Privately owned local pharmacy
Pharmacy associated with a “big box” store such as Target, Walmart, etc.
Do not use any drugs on the pharmacy’s four dollar or other special price list. If the pharmacy has a “club card,” coupons or other special way of getting lower cost, do not use this cost. The cost you are examining is the “cash price” for uninsured patients.
Compare the cash cost of the brand and the generic of the prescription drug, and the OTC drug brand and generic making sure that the dose (milligrams, micrograms, etc.), form (caps, tablets, etc.), and number of pills are the same. (Example: Synthroid .05 milligrams and levothyroxine .05 milligrams, prescription for 30 pills. Tylenol 500 mg. and Acetaminophen 500mg, 100 gel caps.)
Include the city and state of the pharmacies.
The assignment can be in any form you choose including narrative, table, etc. No cover page or reference page is required. Here is a sample table:

Comparing Drug Prices at Different Pharmacies
In this assignment, we will explore the cash prices of prescription drugs and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs at various pharmacies. The goal is to compare the prices of both the brand and generic versions of a prescription drug, as well as the brand and generic versions of an OTC drug. By examining the cash prices for uninsured patients, we can gain insights into the affordability and accessibility of these medications. Additionally, we will consider the location of each pharmacy to provide a comprehensive analysis.
Selection of Drugs:
To begin, select one prescription drug that has a generic available and is sold by pharmacies offering both the brand and generic versions. Additionally, choose one OTC drug that you would typically recommend to patients. Ensure that the dose, form, and number of pills are the same for both the brand and generic versions of the prescription drug, as well as the brand and generic versions of the OTC drug.
Location of Pharmacies:
Next, locate one pharmacy from each of the following categories:
Large chain pharmacies: Examples include Walgreens, CVS, Eckard’s, and others.
Grocery store associate pharmacies: Examples include Publix, Kroger, and similar establishments.
Privately owned local pharmacies: These are independent pharmacies that are not part of a larger chain.
Pharmacies associated with “big box” stores: Examples include Target, Walmart, and similar retailers.
Price Comparison:
Now, it’s time to compare the cash prices of the selected drugs at each pharmacy. Ensure that you are examining the cash prices for uninsured patients, excluding any drugs on the pharmacy’s special price lists or those eligible for discounts through club cards or coupons. Create a clear and organized table or narrative that includes the following information for each pharmacy:
Cash price of the brand version of the prescription drug
Cash price of the generic version of the prescription drug
Cash price of the brand version of the OTC drug
Cash price of the generic version of the OTC drug
Address of each pharmacy, including city and state
Form of Assignment:
The assignment can be presented in any format you choose, such as a table or narrative. There is no need for a cover page or reference page. However, it is crucial to include references to support your findings and ensure the accuracy of the information presented.
Conclusion:
By following these steps, you can successfully complete the Unit 2 Assignment on comparing drug prices at different pharmacies. This assignment provides valuable insights into the affordability and accessibility of prescription and OTC drugs, allowing you to make informed recommendations to patients. Remember to include the city and state of each pharmacy, as well as the cash prices for both the brand and generic versions of the selected drugs.
