ACCT 621 ACCOUNTING FOR MANAGERS

ACCT 621
ACCOUNTING FOR MANAGERS
Group Project
Critical Review of an Article

Normal Group Size: 5-8 members
(Depending on your section)

General guideline
Your group will pick a current article on a selected Financial or Managerial Accounting topic preferably from an academic journal (preferably Canadian) and perform a critical review on that article. All group members are expected to actively participate in both their own and also their fellow classmates’ work.

Your research area
Choose one of the following research areas: 1. Accounting in Canada, 2. Ethics in Financial Reporting, 3. Financial Statement Analysis, 4. Planning for Capital Investments, 5. Job Order Costing (and/or Activity-Based Costing), 6. Cost-Volume-Profit Analysis, 7. Incremental Analysis, 8. Budgetary Planning and Control,
Report your choice (in a WORD file) via Moodle in the following format:

Moodle >>> Week 0 >>> “Team Project Resources”
>>> Submission of Request for Approval of Research Topic/Article Form
Course code e.g. ACCT 621-01
Group no. e.g. 2
Research area e.g. 8. Budgetary Planning and Control

Approval status of your choice of research area and article can be found under the same heading “Group Project Resources” which is normally updated only on a weekly basis in Moodle. Choice of the research areas is approved on a first-come-first-serve basis. No two groups can work on the same research area or article.

Your article
There are many issues that cause concern in Financial and Managerial Accounting. You will need to find an article (preferably 10 pages or more) that has been published recently (preferably in the past 10 years) where there are some controversial issues, or some issues that will need clarification, discussion or debatable. You should avoid choosing an article that just repeats the concepts taught in the class/textbook. Examples of desirable topics are: 1. Is activity-based costing still relevant? 2. Debating the traditional role of budgeting in an organization, etc.

You have to be extra careful with the choice of article as it might have huge impact on your score. You are solely responsible for the choice of articles as it is an integral part of your performance in your group project. The professor will not help you to choose an article. Report your choice (in a WORD file) via Moodle in the following format:

Moodle >>> Week 0 >>> “Group Project Resources”
>>> Submission of Research Topic/Article for Approval
Course code e.g. ACCT 621-01
Group no. e.g. 2
Research area e.g. 8. Budgetary Planning and Control
Title of article e.g A new approach to evaluate budget variance

Approval status of your choice of research area and article can be found under the same heading “Group Project Resources” which is normally updated on a weekly basis in Moodle. Choice of the research area is approved on a first-come-first-serve basis. No two groups can work on the same research area or article.

Your presentation
Powerpoint presentation. A set of powerpoint notes and an original copy of your article in pdf should be submitted to Moodle before you start your presentation. Every group member should do their own part of the presentation.

Your written report
Your written report should have at least 12 (maximum 20) pages of contents prepared in APA format. You may write a brief 1-page summary of the article. You will need to identify core concepts discussed in the article, you are expected to concentrate on performing further research and writing critical comments on those core concepts. Your focus is on how to apply the concepts and create solutions/recommendations to solve business problems and improve business operations.

You will submit your written report to the Turnitin Box. A maximum similarity of 20% is allowed. Cover page, content page and reference pages are excluded from the 20% limit.
