Step 1: Select a hematologic disorder for this discussion.

I will select sickle cell anemia as my hematologic disorder for this discussion.

Step 2: Research a hematologic disorder.

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder that affects the production of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. In people with sickle cell anemia, the hemoglobin is abnormal and forms stiff, crescent-shaped cells. These cells can block blood vessels and cause pain, organ damage, and other health problems.

Step 3: Post a response to the discussion board.

Here are three to five key alterations in hematologic functioning that are caused by sickle cell anemia:

Decreased production of normal hemoglobin. This leads to a decrease in the amount of oxygen that is carried to the body’s tissues.
Increased production of abnormal hemoglobin. This leads to the formation of sickle cells, which can block blood vessels and cause pain, organ damage, and other health problems.
Decreased number of red blood cells. This leads to anemia, which is a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the tissues.
Increased risk of infections. Sickle cells can block blood vessels in the spleen, which is a major organ of the immune system. This can increase the risk of infections.
Increased risk of stroke. Sickle cells can block blood vessels in the brain, which can lead to a stroke.
These are just a few of the key alterations in hematologic functioning that are caused by sickle cell anemia. This disorder can have a significant impact on a person’s health and quality of life.
