Imagine you are a new leader on a health unit. What behaviors and actions do you believe will most earn acceptance? What behaviors and actions should be avoided? How would you know if you were successful in your new role and you had achieved acceptance by your staff?

Journal Entry:

As a new leader on a health unit, my primary goal is to earn acceptance and establish a strong relationship with my staff. According to McConnell (2019), acceptance by followers is crucial and cannot be mandated; it must be earned. To achieve acceptance, I believe it is essential to demonstrate certain behaviors and actions while avoiding others.

First and foremost, I would focus on effective communication. Clear and transparent communication helps build trust and fosters an environment where staff members feel heard and valued. I would actively listen to their concerns, ideas, and suggestions and provide timely and constructive feedback. By promoting open dialogue, I can create a culture of collaboration and teamwork, making staff members feel like their opinions matter.

Another key behavior is leading by example. By consistently demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and dedication, I can inspire my team to strive for excellence. I would ensure that I am accessible and approachable, encouraging an inclusive and supportive atmosphere. By setting high standards for myself and the team, I can establish credibility and earn their respect.

Empathy and understanding are crucial in the healthcare setting. I would make an effort to understand the unique challenges and pressures faced by the staff and provide them with the necessary support and resources.
