Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing
Brief Overview of Theorist’s Background
Dorothea Orem was an American nursing theorist who developed the Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing. She was born in 1914 in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1937. Orem worked as a nurse educator and administrator for many years, and she retired from teaching in 1976. She continued to write and develop her theory until her death in 2007.
Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory is a widely-used theory in nursing. It is based on the premise that people are responsible for their own self-care, and that nursing is needed when people are unable to meet their own self-care needs. The theory identifies three levels of nursing intervention: wholly compensatory, partially compensatory, and supportive-educative.
Discussion of Theorist’s View of the 4 Basic Concepts of Nursing Metaparadigms
Nursing
Orem defines nursing as “the act of assisting individuals, families, and groups to perform self-care, to learn how to perform self-care, or to modify their self-care demands in order to maintain or improve their health.”
Health
Orem defines health as “a state of being and becoming in which an individual is able to perform self-care, to learn how to perform self-care, or to modify their self-care demands in order to maintain or improve their health.”
Person
Orem defines the person as “a self-regulating, purposeful, conscious, and social being who is capable of self-care.”
Environment
Orem defines the environment as “the total complex of all conditions, influences, and forces surrounding and affecting the development and behavior of an individual, family, or group.”
