Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?

March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.

When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.

In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.

Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident.

MD Anderson Cancer Center is a healthcare facility with elaborate medical procedures for cancer treatment. The mission of the cancer center is to eliminate cancer through strategies that integrate patient care, research, and education (MD Anderson, 2019). The vision of the institution is to provide research-driven patient care. The organization has begun evidence-based programs that support its mission. According to the healthcare facility, evidence-based practice is the discipline of improving patient care using the best and current evidence (Mackey & Bassendowski, 2017). The website of the cancer center indicates that 192 research projects have been completed since 2010 (MD Anderson, 2019). The projects have led to changes in policies that enhance the achievement of evidence-based practice. Additionally, the website indicates the cancer center has a Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) that is responsible for generating evidence-based practice. The organization has also presented its research outcomes in national nursing meetings such as the Oncology Nursing Society, Nursing Magnet Conference, and the American Society of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation (MD Anderson, 2019). The presentation in the credible meeting shows they value research-driven treatment. Therefore, the work of the cancer center is grounded in evidence-based practice.
The information presented on the website has changed my perspective of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. I have realized that the cancer center has come to a credible institution in cancer treatment since they have research-based treatment (Fujii et al., 2018). They have continuously engaged in research projects since 2010. Presenting 192 research projects shows their commitment to analyze and synthesize information, data, and knowledge. For example, the website indicates a section of cancer survivors who have been treated in the cancer center. Cora Corky Hilliard is a tongue cancer survivor who is a clear example that the MD Anderson Cancer Center evidence-based approach is bearing fruits.
