Systems Development Life Cycle Assignment Help

Informatics

Assume you are a nurse manager on a unit where a new nursing documentation system is to be implemented. You want to ensure that the system will be usable and acceptable for the nurses impacted. You realize a nurse leader must be on the implementation team.

To Prepare:

Review the steps of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and reflect on the scenario presented.
Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.

The Assignment: (2-3 pages)

In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:

Planning and requirements definition
Analysis
Design of the new system
Implementation
Post-implementation support

Systems Development Life Cycle
Planning and requirements definition stage in the systems development life cycle is a crucial step in the systems development lifecycle. It involves outlining the objectives that the new system should fulfill. The objectives will be accompanied by alternative solutions that can be adopted to solve the problem (Seo, Cha, Shin, Jeong & Kim, 2015). The planning stage requires the input of a nurse leader since he or she will help in determining the specific objectives of the system. The nurse leader will also help in aligning the objectives to the goals of a healthcare organization including enhancing patient care (Singh & Kaur, 2017). It is also the role of the nurse to identify the gaps other systems have not solved in the healthcare organization.
Analysis
The next stage of analysis includes finding out the satisfaction of the end users upon implementation of the new system. The end users in the healthcare sector include nurses or patients. It is the responsibility of the nurse leader to identify the specific needs of a new system (Rastogi, 2015). Nurses expect a usable and efficient system. It is the role of nurse leaders to describe what end users want to experience. Based on the experience with previous systems, it is the role of a nurse leader to measure the feasibility of a new system (Rastogi, 2015). The nurse will consider various factors to determine if a system is applicable or not.
Design of the New System
The designing stage in the systems development life cycle will require a detailed explanation of the needs of the healthcare organization. As designers, engineers, and architects get to work, the nurse leader will help them to design the data flow (Mohankumar & Anand, 2015). The system also needs to have a friendly interface and other components that will promote efficiency and effectiveness. The nurse leader will play a crucial role in determining if the new system will match the design of already existing systems. It will also be the role of the nurse to ensure the existing systems will work seamlessly with the new system (Usman & Nonyelum, 2018). Therefore, designers must get first-hand information from a nurse leader who will use the system once it is designed.
Implementation
A nurse leader is crucial in the implementation stage. As the organization prepares to run the new system, a nurse leader will ensure all the problems identified have been solved effectively (Usman & Nonyelum, 2018). The nurse leader will be a resource to the healthcare organization in explaining how the new system works. He or she will also oversee the smooth transition from the old to the new system. It is thus important to involve the nurse leader from the initial to implementation stages to ensure quality systems are designed.
Post-implementation Support
The final stage of implementation is the support needed as the healthcare organization gets used to the new system. The nurse leader will be crucial in updating the system to ensure it is aligned to a specific configuration. The support will involve fine-tuning the system to deliver the needed results. The function of the nurse leader is to check if the technology is performing the intended functions (Rastogi, 2015). Additionally, he or she should check the seamless flow of data from other technologies that were previously implemented. A nurse leader will thus be essential in the proper running of the system and implementation throughout the systems development life cycle.
