You will assess the effectiveness of models and determine how you would collaborate with a nurse leader to identify opportunities for improvement to ensure quality, safety and staff satisfaction.

Identify the model of nursing care that you observed. Be specific about what you observed, who was doing what, when, how and what led you to identify the particular model
The primary nursing model was observed. It was observed that in the application of this model, that the nurses assumed responsibility for their specific patients. The nurses assumed the responsibility 24/7 which means all the time. They took responsibility by developing a plan of care. They also coordinated the care in their absentia. I selected the primary nursing model since it provides various benefits to patients. It provides continuity of care to the patients until the patient is discharged. The continuity of care attracts high job satisfaction to the registered nurses since they can walk with a patient until they recover (Da Silva et al., 2018). It provides a nurse with responsibility, accountability, and authority over the patient care required. Additionally, the primary nurse has a responsibility of collaborating with other interdisciplinary personnel through communication and coordination to promote healthcare of the patient.

Da Silva et al. (2018), focuses on nursing practice in primary care and patients’ experience of care. The aim of the scholarly journal was to assess the experience of a patient who is subjected to primary care nursing model. The method of the study was a cross-sectional analysis of the care surveys thus using secondary data. The results indicated that patients recorded improved patient care due to the accessibility of the nurse and systematic follow-up.
The scholarly resource shows that the primary nursing model is essential in following up with patients who have chronic health diseases. Patients were served better since the nurses made a close-follow up of their recurrent health needs. Chronic illness and aging population demand primary care for the patients (King, Long & Lisy, 2015). The application of primary nursing model improved patient care and enhanced the efficiency of care. However, the study did not indicate the shortcomings of the primary nursing model. The reason is that there are demerits since it requires flexible scheduling. Additionally, some nurses do not want the responsibility. Therefore, the model has both merits and demerits that must be taken care of during the application of the model.

King, Long, and Lisy (2015) carried out a study focusing on total and team-based care nursing models and their effect on nurses’ wellbeing. The objective of the study was to compare total and team-based care nursing models on the wellbeing of nurses serving in acute care wards. The study comprised of quantitative studies in the systematic review. The studies checked three aspects of staff wellbeing including job satisfaction, turnover and stress levels.
The study has indicated that there is a need to carry out further research on the two nursing care models. The reason is that there were insufficient quantitative studies to be included in the study. The preliminary conclusion shows that the two models under analysis did not have a significant impact on job satisfaction, turnover and stress levels. Additionally, the study did not address important aspects of the nurses’ wellbeing including absenteeism and burnouts. Therefore, there is a need for further research in the future to ascertain the impact of total patient care nursing model on the wellbeing of a nurse.

Functional nursing care model comprises of nurses who are assigned specific tasks such as checking vital signs, injecting and inspecting the intravenous or providing medication (Fairbrother, Chiarella & Braithwaite, 2015). The role of the nurse leader in this nursing model is to provide direction to the overall nursing care. The model is cost-effective since it maximally utilizes the specific skills of the nurses. Therefore, nurses can specialize in one or two tasks. However, the approach has been criticized since it can create gaps in the treatment process since there is no one to follow up to ensure consistency of treatment.
The nursing model can be implemented to improve patient care. The reason is that various tasks are accomplished within a short time. The tasks are administered by specialists who have wide knowledge, for example administering medication. It can be used to enhance the safety of the patients since the specific tasks are administered by nurses who have repeatedly carried them out thus enhancing their experience. It is also important in enhancing staff satisfaction since the staff will provide the services with the skills they have mastered (Pourvakhshoori, Norouzi, Ahmadi, Hosseini & Khankeh, 2017). It is unlike general care where the nurse is required to provide wholesome care to the patients. However, the application of the functional nursing care model is rarely adopted in hospitals since nurses do not want to be limited to specific tasks that can hinder their employability.

The assignment comprises scholarly sources on nursing models. The scholarly sources comprise of primary and functional nursing models. The articles show the differences, similarities, and strengths of each model. They also compared the application of the models and their effect on the wellbeing of nurses and the quality of patient care.
Primary and functional nursing models are essential in the healthcare sector. The two have different approaches which are essential in healthcare. A primary nursing model is a common approach while the functional nursing model is not common. The functional model was used during World War II when there was a shortage in the number of trained nurses. I have also learned the various strengths and weaknesses of the two models.
