Global Healthcare Comparison Assignment

Global Healthcare Comparison
Global Health Issue Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease
Description Non-communicable diseases are not passed from one person to another and they have a long duration. They kill over 41 million people annually, approximately 71 percent of all deaths globally. (“World Health Organization” n.d.). They include diabetes, cancer, and heart disease
Country United States Bosnia
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified health issue The United States has preventive mechanisms to promote healthy living such as educating people on healthy lifestyles. Bosnia has a policy on monitoring and surveillance to identify the cases of non-communicable diseases and start treatment.
What are the strengths of the policy? The policy of preventive measures is effective since it helps people to understand the food they should take to live healthy (World Health Organization, 2013). Additionally, preventive measures reduce cases of death. The monitoring and surveillance are useful since they identify the statistics on the number of people who are affected and thus provide them with an appropriate response (Gicevic et al., 2019).
What are the weaknesses of the policy? The education programs may not be useful in preventing new forms of cancer or heart diseases caused by depression or stress (“World Health Organization” n.d.). The monitoring and surveillance policy does not prevent new cases of cancer or heart diseases from occurring. The policy is a reactive policy, not a preventive policy.
Explain how the
social
determinants of
health may impact
the specified
global health
issue. (Be specific
and provide
examples) In the US, the social determinants of health such as access to healthcare and healthy behaviors enhance the health of the people and reduce the cases of death. In the United States, people have access to health services and they are educated on healthy living. For example, the United States has an elaborate emergency health service to take care of heart diseases or diabetes. In Bosnia, there is poor access to healthcare and little education programs on healthy behaviors. Therefore, the non-communicable diseases continue to spread and more people continue to die. For example, WHO estimates that over 9,000 will die every year by 2030, thus showing the health condition continues to deteriorate than improve (Gicevic et al., 2019).
How has each
country’
government
addressed cost,
quality, and
access to the
selected global
health issue? In the United States, the government is working to enhance the quality of treatment through various medical inventions. People have easy access to healthcare facilities. The government is working to reduce the cost of healthcare. Bosnia has poor access to healthcare services and the quality has deteriorated due to lack of funds and sufficient inventions. Additionally, the cost is high since the facilities are inadequate and the medical specialists are few.
How has the
identified health
policy impacted
the health of the
global population?
(Be specific and
provide examples) The policy of educating people to advocate for healthy lifestyles has changed the global health status. Various countries have learned from the United States on the amount of food, water, and protein they should take. For example, people across the world have embraced healthy lifestyles from the United States such as regular exercise, going to the gym and having enough sleep, which has enhanced their health. The monitoring and surveillance policy in Bosnia has been used as a case study by various countries in Europe on the benefits of elaborate surveillance. For example, all countries in Europe have embraced the creation of vital statistics on cancer and diabetes (Gicevic et al., 2019). The data helps the countries to be ready to respond to severe conditions detected during monitoring.
Describe the
potential impact of
the identified
health policy on
the role of the nurse in
each country. The role of the nurses is to provide patients with information to promote their health. Therefore, nurses are required to provide information to patients when they come for medical checkups. The nurses are thus required to provide information to prevent sickness (Lovatt et al., 2015). In Bosnia, nurses are required to provide comprehensive information on the condition of the patients. It is the role of the nurses to ensure they observe the condition of the patients to prevent unnoticed cases of sickness (Lovatt et al., 2015).
Explain how
global health
issues impact
local healthcare
organizations and
policies in both
countries. (Be
specific and
provide examples) WHO is working to ensure they promote the active policy to ensure people remain active, which will enhance their health. The policy is in line with the United States education programs on healthy lifestyles (Lovatt et al., 2015). For example, diabetes patients are advised to always exercise to keep their bodies healthy. WHO has an active policy that recommends people to remain active. The policy is appropriate in Bosnia since it helps patients to reduce cardiovascular risk factors. For example, Bosnia has high cases of diabetes and obesity among school going children (Gicevic et al., 2019). Therefore, the WHO active policy will help them to ensure their children are exercising and they will remain healthy.
General comments The United States has elaborate plans to fight non-communicable diseases, but they can be enhanced. Bosnia requires to upgrade the healthcare policies to ensure they embrace preventive policies.

A Plan for Social Change
Nurses are responsible for promoting health and preventing illnesses (Lovatt et al., 2015). I would thus advocate for the implementation of a global perspective of WHO. The perspective would help the nurses to realize their position in preventing illnesses. I would push for the empowerment of nurses to help them advocate for better healthy living. Additionally, I would recommend better training to help nurses handle all non-communicable diseases effectively.
The global perspective will be crucial to the nurses since it will provide them with more skills to handle their patients (Lovatt et al., 2015). The WHO active policy will help nurses to always recommend regular exercise to their patients. Therefore, apart from treating their patients, they ensure that their patients remain active. As a nurse leader, I will be required to design and implement policies that support the global perspective of active policy. Additionally, I will work with other nurses and healthcare practitioners to promote active policy.
The global perspective on the active policy will have an impact on the social lives of people. The policy will encourage people to change their diet. It will also compel them to exercise regularly to promote good health. For example, people will change social habits including excessive alcohol consumption, smoking and taking regular checkups. Other social changes will be the interaction between nurses and their patients. The nurses will have advanced recommendations for their patients suffering from non-communicable diseases. Therefore, the implementation of a global perspective will create social changes in society. It should thus be implemented globally to help reduce the number of people who die due to the non-communicable diseases annually.
